Italiano Fratelli

I have previously made mention of Nissan’s curious partnership with Alfa Romeo before on this site when I finally managed to acquire one of the unloved products that emerged from this tie-up, a Nissan Cherry Europe GTi. But the Cherry Europe was only part of the story as elsewhere in Europe the same line of models (the 920 series) was marketed by Alfa Romeo themselves as the ARNA. The model would most likely have been entirely sold as Alfa Romeos, had their UK importer not decided that the ARNA was too downmarket for their image in the UK, which meant the cars were adorned with Nissan badging and sold through Nissan UK dealers. UK Alfa Romeo dealers were not happy though, as they jealously watched Nissan dealers chalk up sales on a model they rightly saw as their own, and at the same time had no small model of their own to sell.

After pressure from their dealers, Alfa Romeo UK relented and agreed to the ARNA being sold through UK Alfa Romeo dealers, a move which almost certainly angered Nissan UK as sales of the Cherry Europe were not great already. The Nissan version was for the UK market only but elsewhere the car was only known as an Alfa Romeo. Alfa purists hated the car from day one and amazingly it seems, even the passage of time hasn’t dulled the vitriol levelled at the poor old ARNA as it seems it is still widely despised by the Alfisti. So, in honour of our much unloved Italian brethren I present a selection of sales brochures below featuring the Alfa Romeo ARNA SL and Ti models from around 1984-85. The brochures are in PDF form so you will require Adobe Acrobat Reader.

  1. Rmad bought to my attention a little while ago that the Cherry also appears to be sold as a Holden Astra in Australia

Don’t know much more than that though. I’m guessing its just a rebadged N12, but with the whole Arna thing I guess it is possible it could have GM motor? Do you know any more?

  2. I edited the link 😉

The Holden Astra version is a rebadged N12 complete with Nissan E series engine. The later N13 based Holden did have a GM engine though. I have a brochure on the N12 Holden Astra I’ll post at some point.
